Critics Review
★”DePaola’s well-honed, color drenched artwork…is warmly appealing; a deceptively simple approach underscored by pure craft.” — Booklist, starred review
“Inventive and revealing, dePaola provides a lyrical blend of text and art. This is an inspired and childlike offering, perhaps one of dePaola’s best.” —Publishers Weekly
“The perennial conflict between Individual and Authority, or between Artist and Society, lies beneath this anecdote, and it’s gratifying to see the small non-conformist accommodated. Everyone can enjoy dePaola’s gentle autobiographical evocation of a loving family and a happy obsession.” — School Library Journal

About The Author
Tomie dePaola
Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1934 to a family of Irish and Italian background. He knew from a young age that he wanted to create books for children, a goal he pursued with a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts.
He worked as a teacher, designed greeting cards and stage sets, and painted church murals before illustrating his first children’s book, Sound, in 1965. Eventually, he dedicated himself fully to writing and illustrating children’s books.
DePaola cited Fra Angelico, Giotto, Georges Rouault, and Ben Shahn as influences, but developed his own distinctive style characterized by unique use of color, line, detail, and design. His work has earned numerous prestigious awards, including:
- Caldecott Honor Award
- Smithsonian Medal
- Kerlan Award
- Regina Medal
- University of Southern Mississippi Medallion
He was also the 1990 United States nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for illustration.
Tomie dePaola authored and illustrated nearly 200 children’s books, published in fifteen countries. Over 5 million copies of his books have sold worldwide. He remained a highly popular creator of children’s literature, receiving approximately 100,000 fan letters annually.
He lived in New Hampshire with his four dogs in a renovated 200-year-old barn that served as his studio.
