THE POET is a daily comic strip that celebrates life's little moments through the eyes of a poet, his spirited pigeon companion, and even - occasionally - a talking park bench. This volume collects a full year's worth of comics, inviting you to embark on a charming and life-affirming walk in the park, sure to enchant new readers (of any age) and longtime fans alike.
The gentle world of THE POET is definitively presented here, with a foreword by Patrick McDonnell, a new afterword, and an extensive notes section.
"Sparse, meditative, and delightful... Like all great comic strip characters, they're fun to look at and a joy to be with."
- PATRICK McDONNELL from his Foreword
"The first book of poetry you won't want to punch in the face."
- DEREK DRYMON, SpongeBob SquarePants
"The Poet is the same kind of strip [as Peanuts]. I find it soothing in the same way. I'd even say it's in the same class. There's a lot going on beneath the surface, if one is looking."
- THE COMICS JOURNAL, Best Comics of 2023
"These comics are very lovely. I keep reading The Poet when I am 'supposed to be doing something else.'"
- LEMONY SNICKET, author
"I think The Poet, as a body of work, qualifies as both comics and poetry, a decidedly rare hybrid."
- DENIS KITCHEN from his Foreword to THE POET Volume One
"Webb whittles and peels back layers to find more and more in these spare but vast strips. A man, a bench, a pigeon; THE WORLD. They hang out up the street from Charlie Brown, Thoreau, Bushmiller, and Cage."
- THE COMICS JOURNAL, Best Comics of 2021
"The Poet has a sense of humor about thinking hard and feeling deeply while not apologizing for such outrageous behavior. It's refreshing."
- HAL HARTLEY, filmmaker
"These gently funny comics strike a happy balance between dreaminess and the corporeal world... what emerges is a sense of love for poetry that's intimate enough to make space for poking fun. It also makes space for a talking bench, which is inarguably a good thing."
- HEATHER CHRISTLE, poet
"Serene, existential, and self-aware, The Poet is a helpful respite from... everything."
- ADAM J. KURTZ, artist
"I love The Poet. It reminds me of how we can be delicate and pompous at the same time."
- TOM HART, founder Sequential Artists Workshop
"The Poet knows small miracles abound if you look at everything as if seeing it for the first time, which is how I feel every time I turn the page in this new collection of funny, sad, strange, and beautiful observations on art, life, friendship, and telephone poles."
- WILL McROBB, co-creator The Adventures of Pete & Pete
"Poets like poems, and birds like donuts. This Poet and bird share the crumbs of their life with love, and the occassional jab in the ribs."
- JOHN PORCELLINO, cartoonist
"I have been a joy-filled fan of Todd's work on The Poet for as long as I can remember. - What's that? How the heck should I know?! Now pipe down so I can finish writing thi- Oh, poop, where was I...?"
- KEVIN POLLACK, actor & comedian
"Every poet is dumb, especially this one. Long live dumb poetry!"
- HAYDEE TOUITOU, poet
"The dreamer wears a hat, the pragmatist feathers, and together they tackle life's eternal questions: Where are we? What are we doing here? And, Did I just eat an eraser? Four panels and the truth."
- ANDI WATSON, cartoonist
