Summary
James Dowling (1787-1844) was the third judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1828, and became its second Chief Justice in 1837, following the retirement of Sir Francis Forbes. Dowling was knighted in 1838 and died in office at the age of 56.

Tim D. Castle
Tim Castle is a practising Barrister in Sydney, New South Wales and a Senior Research Fellow in the Division of Law at Macquarie University. Bruce Kercher is Emeritus Professor of Law at Macquarie University. He has published a number of legal history books, including the companion to this volume (Castle and Kercher (eds), Dowlinga ™s Select Cases, 1828 to 1844: Decisions of the Supreme Court of New South Wales (2005)). He is particularly interested in the ways in which English law was adapted to the conditions of British colonies during the nineteenth century. He is President of the Francis Forbes Society for Australian Legal History.
