About The Author
Thomas Mann
Thomas Mann (1875–1955) was a German writer of novels, short stories, and essays, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929.
He began his writing career by contributing short stories to magazines, and his first novel, Buddenbrooks, was published in 1901. After Hitler came to power, Mann left Germany for Switzerland, becoming a key contributor to Exilliteratur, the body of work written by German authors who fled the Nazi regime between 1933 and 1945.
Throughout the Second World War, Mann was vocal in his opposition to the Nazis. He later lived in the US during the 1950s, where he was suspected of being a communist. He eventually returned to Switzerland, where he died in 1955.
