In this brand-new novella collection, three renowned Christian historical fiction authors trace generations of wartime romances through a wedding dress with love sewn into its seams.
"A Heart in Disguise" by Rachel Scott McDaniel
Clara Westlake loves her job as a seamstress in the US "Camouflage Corps," sewing suits for snipers and contributing to the war effort. But when she overhears a threat against her beloved New York City, the Great War comes too close to homemdashexcept no one believes her forewarning. She must recruit Marcus Reeves, a childhood friend searching for his purpose after suffering a devastating war injury. As they search for answers together, they may also uncover a love that lasts.
"A Letter to Eli" by Allison Pittman
Bette and Alice are lifelong friends, trying to make a good life for themselves in New York City while World War II rages. It's never far from their thoughtsmdashnot with Alice's fiancé serving at sea, in danger every minute. That's a worry Bette doesn't envy. Then a secret letter reunites her with her soldier ex-boyfriend, now wounded and back in the States. But can the innocent love these two had before the war be rekindled in the face of tragedy?
"A Daffodil in the Dress" by Susie Finkbeiner
Kate Becker and Ike Finch have worked together at his family's bookstore since Kate's husband died in the early days of the Vietnam War. She has her daughter, Eloise, to take care of and bills to pay, and this job was a godsend. A second love is not in the cards, especially not with the world still teetering on the edge of insanity. But when Ike brings little Eloise special flowers one spring day, Kate begins to look at him as more than an employer. Is falling in love again worth the risk?

Critic Reviews

Something Borrowed is a collection that had me quickly turning the pages to experience each story revolving around the same wedding dress across several generations. The opening novella, "A Heart in Disguise" by Rachel Scott McDaniel, drew me in from the very first line. Something Borrowed is the happy marriage of three powerhouse voices of historical fiction, and McDaniel, Pittman, and Finkbeiner each shine here! A wedding dress, rich in beauty and history, ties these stories together, but it's the breathtaking tales of love--sometimes lost, eventually found, often unexpected, and always worth the wait--that will connect with the reader's heart. Prepare to get blissfully swept away!--Bethany Turner, best-selling author of Brynn and Sebastion Hate Each Other (5/31/2024 12:00:00 AM)

About the Author

CBA bestselling author Susie Finkbeiner is a story junkie. Always has been and always will be. It seems it's a congenital condition. After decades of reading everything she could get her hands on (except for See the Eel, a book assigned to her while in first grade, a book she declared unfit for her book-snob eyes), Susie realized that she wanted to write stories of her own. She began with epics about horses and kittens (but never, ever eels). In order to learn how to write novels, she read eclectically and adventurously. After reading the work of Lisa Samson, Patti Hill, and Bonnie Grove she realized that there was room for a writer like her in Christian fiction. Susie is also greatly inspired by the work of Jocelyn Green, Rachel McMillan, and Tracy Groot. Her first novels, Paint Chips (2013) and My Mother's Chamomile (2014) have contemporary settings. While she loved those stories and especially the characters, Susie felt the pull toward historical fiction. When she read Into the Free by Julie Cantrell she knew she wanted to write historical stories with a side of spunk, grit, and vulnerability. A Cup of Dust: A Novel of the Dust Bowl (2015), Finkbeiner's bestselling historical set in 1930s Oklahoma, has been compared to the work of John Steinbeck and Harper Lee (which flatters Susie's socks off). Pearl's story continues with A Trail of Crumbs: A Novel of the Great Depression (2017) and A Song of Home: A Novel of the Swing Era (2018). Susie Finkbeiner is a stay-at-home mom & speaker from West Michigan. She has served as fiction editor and regular contributor to the Burnside Writers Guild and Unbound magazine. Finkbeiner is an avid blogger (see , is on the planning committee of the Breathe Christian Writers Conference, and has presented or led groups of other writers at several conferences. What does she have planned after that? More stories, of course. She's a junkie. She couldn't quit if she wanted to. Rachel Scott McDaniel is an award-winning author of historical romance. Winner of the ACFW Genesis and the RWA Touched by Love awards, Rachel infuses faith and heart into each story. She can be found online at rachelscottmcdaniel.com and on all social media platforms. She enjoys life in Ohio with her husband and two kids. Allison Pittman is the author of For Time and Eternity, Stealing Home, the Crossroads of Grace series, and her nonfiction debut, Saturdays With Stella. A high-school English teacher, she serves as director of the theater arts group at her church. She is also the co-president of a dynamic Christian writers group in the San Antonio, Texas area, where she makes her home with her husband and their three boys.
