"Sue Renault knows how to find poems: stunning poems of nature, deeply moving poems of perception. Poems of common being. She finds them by the simple act of observation - not a few of them peering at 'the brittle wings of tiny things that hover over summer mud.' Turtles and owls and children at play ... An avid bicyclist, peddling deliberately, daly along a trail that has become precious to her, Renault finds what she needs
to craft them. And for that dedication and diligence, the reader of this lovely book is much the better for it."
-Arthur McMaster, Author
"The Swamp Rabbit Trail Poet translates to words the joy and happiness that can be found in the nature that resides along the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail network. She has an ethereal skill that connects all types of people to the power of being in the now, the now that surrounds us along the trail. She has an ability to evoke emotions and understanding that will touch your heart."
-Ty Houck, Director of Greenways, Natural and Historic Resources for Greenville County Parks, Recreation & Tourism
Sue grew up with two harbors and an ocean surrounding her small New England town. She learned to swim, find clams, and climb the rocks at a young age. She was a collector: sea shells, beach glass and smooth stones. These became jewelry and window sill sun-collectors. She believed nothing could pull her from her New England roots.Years later, though, all grown up, she & Lance followed a job change to Greenville, South Carolina; years after that they retired and became downtown city dwellers... with Greenville's brand new Swamp Rabbit Trail biking/walking path meandering past their "back yard." When Sue had a series of hip surgeries, she turned to the trail for exercise and recovery, healing one mile at a time. The trail was kind to her, filling her spirit with playful squirrels, squawky cardinals and the fellow she called her heron friend. In no time at all, she was collecting again and discovering all over the fun of tucking something new into her basket. She collected the sounds of the trees. She collected stories of the other trail runners and riders. She collected poetry flowers and heart-shaped leaves. Now, she takes these home and turns them into her own heart's joy. She writes their poetry and gives it to you.
