Susan Methven is an excellent children's book writer. She handles tricky topics with great sensitivity and thoughtfulness. I loved her other book "Skin" and this book, "Uncles" is just as good. This story is about a child attending the wedding of her uncle, who is marrying a man and the conversations that surround this happy event. Methven has an uncommon way of entering the child's world and not affecting the child's narrative voice, but almost embodying it. It makes for authentic, down-to-earth and realistic story-telling.

This book does a terrific job of showing how simple conversations around love can and probably should be. It's quick and easy, makes sense to both children and adults, and easily opens conversation to discuss the topic further if you want to. The warm illustrations add to the experience and make the whole thing a comfortable narrative. Very enjoyable.Reviewed in Australia on July 13, 2024
An excellent book about what for some would be a difficult subject - gay marriage. The ready acceptance by the little girl, Emily, of Uncle Kurt's marriage to another man (after some initial bemusement, it must be said) is endearing, and the question about who is going to be the one to walk down the aisle poses a nice little teaser to keep interest. I applaud the author for writing this book.

A gentle introduction to the LGBTQ community for kids. It was good for the adult character (Meemaw) to show support for her son in the presence of her young granddaughter. The story is delivered with lightness and compassion. Well done!

This is a simple children's book that shows a little girl buying a dress and attending her gay uncle's wedding. It shows the girl's confusion at first about a man marrying another man. Through role-playing dolls, meemaw helps her come to the conclusion that people should be with who they love, whatever the sex. It ends with the girl having a great time at the wedding. I think this book is executed well.

This book is excellent for helping parents and grandparents address the challenging task of introducing the topic of homosexuality and gay marriage. I believe that it is the family's responsibility to discuss the subject at the right time for the child or when a situation arises that necessitates it. The book handles the subject with sensitivity and in a natural manner. Top marks.
