Critics Review

“I have been eagerly awaiting this book since I heard about it pre-release last fall. Sue Daley has many, many clever and creative patterns that use English paper piecing in innovative ways. In this book, she introduces unusual shapes to paper piece, including pointed thimbles, curved octagons and hexagon petals. She also advocates glue basting, a method not often mentioned in English paper piecing books. The projects in the book are lovely and intricate, focusing around primarily muted and traditional color schemes. Two things would have made this book even better. First, I would have liked to see applique instructions specific to paper pieced shapes. Even though the projects use paper piecing appliqued onto backgrounds, the technique section describing applique is a bit generic, using a heart as an illustration instead of a paper pieced shape. Second, I did not have immediate access to paper packs for these unusual shapes, so it would have been great if the book included template pages with full pages of each shape. Then you could just copy and cut, instead of having to trace as many shapes as you need onto paper before cutting them all out. Overall, the book has a good range of projects, from fairly small and simple to full-sized quilts. I would recommend this book to experienced quilters looking for a new set of techniques to challenge their skills.”–Emily Breclaw “Customer”“New English Paper Piecing by Sue Daley is a book for all the english paper piecers that don’t have time to make more than one of the quilts, made with this method to make hexagon quilts and other quilts that are sewn by individual piece by hand. Daley speeds things up by using acrylic templates with rotary cutting and glue to baste the pieces onto the paper or cardboard. She also uses these small pieces as appliques onto another quilt. New English Paper Piecing isn’t just about making hexagon quilts. This book contains 10 projects, some with blocks that form melon shapes, flower shapes and blocks, elongated hexagons, and more. These shapes are embellished with delicate fabric butterflies, and hand embroidery. Daley’s book is a good book for beginning english paper piecers, and for all of us with time limits.”–Judy Bowers “Customer”I give Sue Daley praises for not only creating beautiful quilts but for her teaching. Sue walks you through each and every step process in successfully creating beautiful English Paper Piecing (EPP) projects. She even goes the extra mile in teaching needle turn applique to enhance your EPP projects and she also teaches how to embroider as well. This book is also full of tips of what to do and not to do when it comes to EPP and hand stitching.
