Just because mental health is discussed more today than ever, doesn't mean it's something new. Martin Luther's Letters of Spiritual Consolation cover issues like anxiety and depression as Luther advises his friends and family on their mental health.
When Christians struggle with their mental health, the first place they go is the church. Saunders equips pastors and church leaders with a resource on supporting their congregation with Scripture and medically-sound advice.
Luther's kind, compassionate, prescient advice is applicable to anyone under emotional distress. Pastors, teachers, and leaders alike will gain a greater understanding of and ability to support those struggling with their mental health.
"Stephen Saunders tracks the trajectory of sound mental health care from scripture to Luther to our day. This gem of a book will be an asset to pastors, deaconesses, and Christians in general both now and for years to come." - Rev. Dr. Kevin S. Golden, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Exegetical Theology, Concordia Seminary-St. Louis
"There is no quick and easy GPS available to provide care for others, yet Saunders has provided an array of vital concepts and tools that will be valuable to those who would keep vigil with those who suffer." Dr. Beverly Yahnke, Ph.D., Executive Director for Christian Counsel, DOXOLOGY: The Lutheran Center for Spiritual Care and Counsel

Loved this book! An empathetic look at mental health and how Martin Luther counseled people with mental health issues. A great read for every Christian. This book exposed some of my own stigmas and prejudices I had regarding people suffering from mental illness.
