Stacy Gregg
Stacy Gregg (Ngāti Mahuta/Ngāti Pukeko/Ngāti Maru) grew up in Ngāruawāhia, a small but culturally significant town.
Her award-winning children’s novel, Nine Girls, is set in this town and explores the socially tumultuous late seventies and early eighties in New Zealand. The book won the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year Award and the Esther Glen Award for Junior Fiction at the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults in 2024. Written for readers aged 10-13, it also appeals to adults and touches on themes similar to her 2022 essay, ‘The Māoris From the Town Side of the River,’ which won a New Zealand Voyager Journalism Award in 2023.
Stacy has previously published 32 middle-grade fiction novels with HarperCollins UK, making her HarperCollins New Zealand’s third best-selling children’s author of all time. Her Pony Club Secrets series sold over 1.5 million copies globally in English alone and was adapted into the CBBC TV series Mystic, which ran for three seasons.
Her subsequent series, Pony Club Rivals, continued her success in the pony genre before she transitioned to stand-alone hardbacks. Her first hardback, The Princess and the Foal, released in 2013, was based on the true story of Princess Haya of Jordan, written with her blessing. Stacy’s research for her novels has taken her to Jordan, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Russia, and Iceland.
Before her recent national book awards, Stacy was an eight-time finalist and a three-time consecutive winner of the Children’s Choice Award. She has also twice won TV’s WhatNow Children’s Choice Award for middle-grade fiction.
Other titles for younger readers include the junior fiction series Spellbound Ponies, the picture books In or Out and The Easter Bunny Hunt, and the popular Mini Whinny series.
Her screenwriting credits include Mystic and the Acorn TV series My Life Is Murder.
Stacy lives in Auckland, New Zealand.
