Garfield Barwick
Garfield Barwick was a distinguished figure in Australian legal and political history, renowned as a leading barrister, politician, and Australia’s longest-serving Chief Justice.
He took silk in 1942 and, during the 1950s, was widely recognized as Australia’s preeminent counsel. His notable achievements were acknowledged through several honors: he was knighted in 1953, appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG) in 1965, and made a Knight of the Order of Australia in June 1981.
Barwick entered Parliament in 1958, subsequently holding the positions of Attorney-General and Minister for External Affairs. He advised the Governor-General on two significant occasions: firstly, regarding the disappearance of Prime Minister Harold Holt, and secondly, in 1975, he advised Governor-General John Kerr that the reserve powers permitted the dismissal of the Whitlam Government.
Beyond his public service, Barwick was a patron of the Australian Conservation Foundation and supported charities dedicated to assisting those with hearing and sight impairments. His retirement in 1981 was prompted by blindness resulting from diabetes. Garfield Barwick passed away on July 13, 1997.
