Summary

The text describes the fundamental concepts of usability and user experience, and how they are defined, designed for, and eventually measured and evaluated. It covers the surface treatment of bioimplant materials by the electrical discharge machining process and the influence of surface texture on the tribological behaviour of artificial joints. It showcases the experimental investigation of the surface hardness of two dissimilar metal welded joints.

About The Author

Shubrajit Bhaumik

  • Shubrajit Bhaumik is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Chennai Campus. He founded the Tribology and Interactive Surfaces Research Laboratory (TRISUL), focusing on industrial application-oriented research, and currently serves as its Centre Head. Dr. Bhaumik has extensive experience since 2006 working with industries on various Tribology-related projects, achieving energy savings. His expertise includes hard-face welding, open-gear inspections, and lubricants. His research interests encompass nano and green tribology, energy-efficient lubricants, and minimizing friction and wear. He has successfully implemented energy-efficient nano-lubricant concepts in real-time industrial applications, leading to significant energy savings and payback. Dr. Bhaumik’s work also extends to lubricants, polymers, and fretting wear. He has published numerous papers in reputed journals and book chapters, and holds an Indian patent in tribology with others pending. The Tribology Research Team led by him developed AI-integrated bearing failure detection apps, which have gained industry recognition and been featured in prominent newspapers. Dr. Bhaumik has received accolades such as the Best Research Award at the Malaysian International Tribology Conference 2015 and a DST SERB fellowship. He is an international ambassador for Surface Venture, a UK-based non-profit organization promoting tribology knowledge. He also serves on the editorial boards of several tribology journals.

  • Viorel Paleu is a habilitated full professor of mechanical engineering at the “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iasi, Romania, since October 2021. He began his academic career there in 1996 and obtained his Ph.D. with Magna Cum Laude in 2002. He has progressed through all academic ranks at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. His doctoral and post-doctoral research was conducted at INSA Lyon, France, involving collaborations with industrial partners and securing international research grants. He has led five national research projects and participated in over 20 national and international initiatives. His research areas include tribology, lubrication, rolling bearings, coatings, machine elements, materials, and diagnostics, with publications in leading scientific journals. He has reviewed for over 800 international journals and served on committees for major international conferences. Currently, Professor Paleu is the Vice Dean for Research and Quality at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. He is also the Vice-President of the Romanian Tribology Association (ART) and has been President of the Romanian Transmissions Association (ROAMET) since 2008.

  • V. Jayakumar is the Principal of the School of Engineering and Computing, Chennai, and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Chennai Campus. With over 25 years of teaching experience, including seven years abroad, he has held visiting faculty positions in Oman, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. He holds a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering, M.E. in Industrial Engineering, an MBA, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Operations Research. He earned his Ph.D. from the College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University. Dr. Jayakumar is the author of 10 textbooks, four of which are adopted by Indian universities, and has published over 85 research papers in Scopus-indexed journals. His research interests lie in Cellular Manufacturing Systems, Friction Stir Welding, Composite Materials, Advanced Manufacturing Systems, and Production and Operations Management.

  • Emrullah Hakan Kaleli is a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, Automotive Division, at Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul. His primary research areas include internal combustion engines (gasoline and diesel), tribology, wear, lubrication, and friction. He also conducts research on engine tribology, nanotribology, lubrication, friction wear, engine oils, additives, coatings, drain interval and additive effects on sliding surfaces, surface analysis, nanoadditives, and nanocoatings, with numerous international publications in these fields. He has served on scientific and advisory committees for many international conferences.
