The Spiritual Dimension of the Enneagram

Nine Faces of the Soul

Author: Sandra Maitri

Paperback

The enneagram is a widely used method of deciphering your personality by identifying yourself among nine basic types. Although the method has grown in popularity, almost all presentations treat it only as a typology of personality, a valuable psychological tool that can help people understand and change their behavior.

Sandra Maitri's masterful work is one of the first books to explore in an authentic and comprehensive way the original spiritual dimension of the enneagram. Among the most knowledgeable teachers of the enneagram in America, Maitri shows how the enneagram not only reveals our personalities, but illuminates a basic "essence" within each of us. She shows how traversing the inner territory particular to our ennea-type can bring us profound fulfillment and meaning, as well as authentic spiritual development.

The enneagram's true function, Maitri explains, is to "point the way to who we are beyond the level of personality, a dimension of ourselves that is infinitely more profound, more interesting, and more rewarding". In The Spiritual Dimension of the Enneagram, Maitri shows readers: — How to locate ourselves among the nine ennea-types and understand the often-unconscious spiritual dilemmas at the root of our psychological make-up. — How to use the information about our ennea-type not only to comprehend our personality or simply transform it, but as a path to inner development and a doorway to our essential nature. — How to understand our ennea-type as the meeting point of our type's "wings", the ennea-types on either side of our own; our "soul child", an inner structure of tremendous impact on our lives; and the "instinctual subtypes", which depict our focusand functioning in major life-arenas.

In restoring the enneagram to its original spiritual context, The Spiritual Dimension of the Enneagram offers a unique and powerful tool for self-transformation. Brilliantly conceived, the book makes an important and long-lasting contribution to the literature of psychospirituality.

About the Author

Sandra Maitri was a member of the first group of students to whom the Chilean psychiatrist Claudio Naranjo presented the enneagram system in the U.S. almost three decades ago. Throughout her many years of studying and teaching it, Maitri has preserved the legacy of this original transmission. In addition to her work with Naranjo, she has studied with various Eastern and Western spiritual and psychological teachers, including A.H. Almaas, founder of the contemporary spiritual path, the Diamond Approach. As one of the principal and supervising teachers of the Diamond Approach, she teaches the enneagram as part of the larger work of personal transformation, working with hundreds of students each year in the U.S. and Europe. She lives in Marin County, California.
