Saba Alemayoh
Born in Sudan to Ethiopian parents, Saba arrived in Australia in 1999 at the age of nine with her mother. After completing her education, Saba joined the Australian Army, becoming part of the first group of women in the Australian Army to engage in combat. Following her military service, Saba opened a restaurant in Melbourne’s Fitzroy named after herself. She managed the front of house, while her mother, Tekebash Gebre, prepared the authentic dishes of their homeland, relying on memory, taste, and instinct in the kitchen. Tekebash was born in Tigray during the reign of the last Ethiopian emperor, who was deposed in 1974 by a communist military government supported by the Soviet Union. She later became a refugee in Sudan during the rebellion that occurred in the 1990s amidst Ethiopia’s transition from communism to a democratic government. After the restaurant closed, Saba moved to Lagos, where she is involved in music and arts events and curates art exhibitions.
