About The Author
Ruth Krauss
Ruth Krauss (1901-1993) was a playwright, poet, and children’s author. Her book A Hole Is to Dig was written collaboratively with nursery-school students and was illustrated by Maurice Sendak. She collaborated with many outstanding illustrators, including Marc Simont, and her husband, Crockett Johnson, the author of Harold and the Purple Crayon.
Margot Tomes (1917-1991) was an American artist and illustrator of children’s books. Two books she illustrated were cited by The New York Times as among the best children’s books of the year: Jack and the Wonder Beans in 1977 and If There Were Dreams to Sell in 1984. She is also known for illustrating books by Judith St. George, Aileen Fisher, and Newbery Honor author Jean Fritz.
