She graduated from Columbia Law School in 1959 in a tie for the first in her class. She was on both the Columbia Law Review and the Harvard Law Review–the first woman to be on two major law reviews. She became a professor at Rutgers Law School in 1963 and she subsequently taught at Columbia Law School from 1972 to 1980. In 1972, she also co-founded the Women’s Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
