What do we make of the events of our lives, positive or negative? How do we receive them, and how do we respond to them? What choices do we make, and what are we to make of the choices themselves?
A baby is born with life-threatening seizures, and his family is stuck on an island in poor weather ... what comes next? A young man drops out of college due to illness and is drafted into the Vietnam War. How does he respond to this turn of events? A husband and father of three gets the news that he has two forms of cancer. How shall the family choose to live in a moment like this?
Welcome to one man's journey to discover the key to troubleshooting any problem life throws at us (including those we throw at ourselves). In the sky, on land, and by sea, you will accompany the author-on the first, desperate night of his life; through tales of youthful, reckless indiscretions; head-on into military adventures with hurricanes, defectors, and falsified charges; into the not-unformidable challenges of civilian life; and at last across that final frontier of faith: trusting God in the face of one's own mortality.
Says Nickerson, "The human body is capable of enduring tremendous cold and tremendous adversity. And we can also endure when we understand that God is our refuge and strength." Open the book in your hands and learn along with him the comfort and power to be found in embracing the guidance and faithfulness of the ultimate Navigator.
"Ron Nickerson has lived a life of challenges and successes. Throughout his life the Lord has been central, and Ron has always proclaimed his dependance on God. The book is more than a story on Ron's life. It's a story of how God leads us. Those who read the book will be blessed." Nikolaus Satelmajer, retired pastor
"Pastor Ron and his wife Lorelei (whom I lovingly refer to as "Mrs. Pastor") have been our dear friends and mentors for many years. Ron introduced us to the concept of nurturing a loving relationship with Jesus, while Lorelei nourished us with delicious home-cooked meals in her cozy kitchen.
"My husband recalls as a young Pathfinder sitting spellbound as Pastor Ron shared tales of his adventures in the Coast Guard while stationed in Alaska. Decades later, our own children have sat captivated as Pastor recounts those same stories often told in numerous settings-from a pulpit, around a campfire, at a kitchen table, or under a Juniors tent at camp meeting.
"A master storyteller, Pastor Ron draws from his wide-ranging and often astonishing life experiences to share how in the midst of hardship and uncertainty there is a loving Savior who walks every step of our journey with us.
"I write this while wrapped in the warmth of a wool shawl woven on a loom by Ron and Lorelei of yarn spun from wool from their own sheep. I may, or may not be, the Mother in Chapter 27, The Sheep Story." Family friend
Ron served in the Coast Guard, had great success in radio frequency design and plasma physics, and started four companies. What stood above all these in his memory was the pleasure of teaching young people, sharing stories, and showing the way to Jesus.Ron enjoyed electronics, woodworking, weaving, and spinning wool. He cherished the prayer of Psalm 139:23, 24: "Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting" (NKJV). He and Lorelei made their home in New Hampshire until he fell asleep on February 2, 2025, to await the wake-up call of the Life Giver.
