Raised in Mozambique, he earned a PhD from Johns Hopkins University, focusing on coral reefs in the Chagos Archipelago. A former leader at IUCN, WWF, and The Nature Conservancy, Rod has shaped global marine conservation strategies, emphasizing coral reef resilience to climate change. Author of Marine and Coastal Protected Areas: A Guide for Planners and Managers, he now advises various organizations, including the Coral Triangle Center in Bali. Rod lives in Kailua, Hawaii, and continues his conservation work through mentorship and field projects.
