If war is ever to be eliminated, Hinde and Rotblat argue that we must address key issues such as the gap between the rich and the poor; we must have tighter arms controls; and above all we must have better education. The authors explain how the United Nations - as well as non-governmental organizations, religious groups, and grassroots movements - all have an important part to play.

About the Author

Joseph Rotblat - A nuclear physicist of Polish descent, Rotblat came to Liverpool University in 1939 to work on the feasibility of a nuclear bomb. He then became part of the Manhattan Project which developed the first atom bomb, but left when it became clear that Nazi Germany was not going to be able to build its own bomb, and the US project could not be justified in terms of deterrence. After the war, Rotblat became a leading campaigner against nuclear weapons, especially through the Pugwash conference, which he founded. He received a Nobel Laureate for Peace in 1995. Robert A Hinde - trained as a biologist, he has specialised in ethology (the study of animal behaviour) and has also branched out into (human) psychology. An advocate for peace for many years, he has written books on war and strategies for peace. He is a professor at Cambridge University.
