About the Author

Robert S. Feldman isProfessor of Psychological and Brain Sciences and Senior Advisor to theChancellor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. A recipient of theCollege Distinguished Teacher Award, he teaches psychology classes ranging insize from 10 to nearly 500 students. During the course of more than threedecades as a college instructor, he has taught both undergraduate and graduatecourses at Mount Holyoke College, Wesleyan University, and VirginiaCommonwealth University in addition to the University of Massachusetts.
 
Professor Feldman, who initiated the Minority Mentoring Program at theUniversity of Massachusetts, also has served as a Hewlett Teaching Fellow andSenior Online Teaching Fellow. He initiated distance learning courses inpsychology at the University of Massachusetts.
 
A Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association forPsychological Science, and the American Association for the Advancement ofScience, Professor Feldman received a B.A. with High Honors from WesleyanUniversity (from which he received the Distinguished Alumni Award). He has anM.S. and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a winner of aFulbright Senior Research Scholar and Lecturer award, and he has written morethan 100 books, book chapters, and scientific articles. He has edited Developmentof Nonverbal Behavior in Children (Springer-Verlag) and Applicationsof Nonverbal Behavioral Theory and Research (Erlbaum), andco-edited Fundamentals of Nonverbal Behavior (CambridgeUniversity Press). He is also author of Child DevelopmentUnderstandingPsychology, and P.O.W.E.R. Learning: Strategies for Success inCollege and Life. His books have been translated into many languages,including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, Korean, German, Arabic,and Japanese. His research interests include honesty and deception in everydaylife, work that he described in The Liar in Your Life, a trade bookpublished in 2009. His research has been supported by grants from the NationalInstitute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Disabilities andRehabilitation Research.
 
Professor Feldman is past president of the Federation of Associations ofBehavioral and Brain Sciences Foundation, a consortium of societies thatbenefit the social sciences. In addition, he is on the board of New EnglandPublic Radio. Professor Feldman loves music, is an enthusiastic pianist, andenjoys cooking and traveling. He has three children and four grandchildren, andhe and his wife, a psychologist, live in western Massachusetts in a homeoverlooking the Holyoke Mountain Range.
