Summary

Explores the function and evolution of the role of Governor from the perspective of McGarvie’s own experiences in Victoria. McGarvie also tackles the republic debate, arguing that the institutions of Governor and Governor-General can be incorporated in a formal republic with very little change. This is an intriguing account.

Critics Review

“I can’t tell you how much I admire Richard McGarvie and his book … This retired Supreme Court judge and Victorian governor gives us a crisp message we must hear before we go mad on our republican frolic … Bravo, Dick M cGarvie. He’s seen how Australia works from the bottom up, from the floor of a milking shed to the ballroom of Government House. No wonder it took a man like him to devise a solution as practical and patriotic as this.” –“Herald Sun”
