About the Author

The prize-winning poet, Reza Mohammadi - widely regarded as one of the most exciting young poets writing in Persian today - was born in Kandahar in 1979. He studied Islamic Law and then Philosophy in Iran before obtaining an MA in Globalisation from London Metropolitan University.His three collections of poetry have gained him many awards, such as from the Afghan Ministry of Culture in 2004 and prizes for being Iran's best young poet in 1996 and 1997.Reza Mohammadi is also a prolific journalist and cultural commentator. His articles have been published in journals in Afghanistan and Iran, as well as in English by The Guardian.Hamid Kabir was born in Kabul. After finishing school, he won a scholarship to read Medicine at Moscow Medical Academy. In 1997 he settled in the UK to study International Business with German Language. He worked for HSBC Bank and two world-class software solutions companies before joining Ariana Travel Limited as the Chief Executive Officer. Alongside his main jobs, he also worked for various charitable projects and assumed the role of the Chairman of the Afghan Association of London in 2010/2011. Hamid has appeared in various TV and Radio programmes commenting on Afghan affairs, including Russia Today, BBC News 24, BBC Radio 4, Daily Politics and BBC Persian. Presently he is also the editor in chief of the only Afghan fortnightly newspaper published in London, Simorg.With Nick Laird, Hamid translated the poems of the Afghan poet, Reza Mohammadi, for the PTC's Persian Poets' Tour.Born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland in 1975, Nick Laird was educated at Cookstown High School and Cambridge University. He worked as a lawyer for several years before leaving law to write full-time. The recipient of many prizes for his poetry and fiction, including the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, the Ireland Chair of Poetry Award, the Betty Trask Prize, a Somerset Maugham award, and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize, he has lived in London, Warsaw, and Rome. He is currently an adjunct professor at Columbia University in New York.He has published two novels, Utterly Monkey (2005) and Glover's Mistake (2008), and two prize-winning books of poems, To a Fault (2005) and On Purpose (2007) which won the Somerset Maugham Award and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. His latest collection, Go Giants, was published by Faber in 2012.With Hamid Kabir, Nick translated the poetry of Reza Mohammadi from Afghanistan for the PTC's Persian Poets' Tour.
