Ranulph Fiennes
Sir Ranulph Fiennes is renowned for being the first person to reach both the North and South Poles by surface travel and the first to traverse the Antarctic continent unsupported.
His early career included a period in the SAS, from which he was dismissed in the 1960s for misuse of explosives. Following this, he joined the army of the Sultan of Oman, where his active service earned him the country’s Bravery Medal in 1971.
Sir Ranulph holds the unique distinction of being the only individual to receive two clasps to the Polar Medal, awarded for his achievements in both Antarctic and Arctic regions. He has led more than thirty expeditions, including the inaugural polar circumnavigation of the Earth.
In 2003, he demonstrated remarkable endurance by completing seven marathons in seven days across seven continents, all in support of the British Heart Foundation.
In recognition of his fundraising efforts, which have generated over £14 million for various charities, Her Majesty the Queen awarded him the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1993.
Sir Ranulph was honored as Best Sportsman at the 2007 ITV Great Briton Awards. In 2009, he achieved another milestone by becoming the oldest Briton to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
