About The Author

Ranulph Fiennes

Sir Ranulph Fiennes is renowned for being the first person to reach both the North and South Poles by surface travel and the first to complete an unsupported crossing of the Antarctic Continent.

In the 1960s, he was discharged from the SAS Regiment for misuse of explosives. Later, after joining the army of the Sultan of Oman, he was awarded that country’s Bravery Medal for his actions on active service in 1971.

Sir Ranulph is the only individual to have received two clasps to the Polar Medal, one for the Antarctic region and one for the Arctic region. He has led more than thirty expeditions, including the pioneering polar circumnavigation of the Earth. In 2003, he demonstrated remarkable endurance by running seven marathons in seven days across seven continents, all to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.

In recognition of his achievements and fundraising efforts, which have generated over £14 million for charity, Her Majesty the Queen awarded Fiennes the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1993. In 2007, he was named Best Sportsman at the ITV Great Briton Awards. In 2009, he achieved another milestone by becoming the oldest Briton to successfully summit Mount Everest.
