Description

This book explores the processing, properties, and applications of Posidonia oceanica, an abundant marine plant found in the Mediterranean Sea, for the production of cellulose and nanocellulose. It demonstrates the treatment of Posidonia oceanica waste through chemical and mechanical modifications to produce a renewable, biodegradable nanomaterial known as nanocellulose. The unique properties of this nanocellulose enable its applications as an adsorbent material for dye removal, as nanofibers in composites, and in macromolecular materials. This book is an essential resource for university departments in chemistry, materials science, and physics, as well as research institutions and industries interested in the valorization of Posidonia oceanica residues. It provides insights into using this marine biomass to produce cellulose derivatives and/or lignocellulosic fibers for fiber-reinforced composites and papermaking applications. Furthermore, the book consolidates valuable knowledge about Posidonia oceanica and its multi-scale valorization for the development of innovative materials.

About the Author

Dr. Ramzi Khiari is a senior lecturer at the Higher Institute of Technological Studies in Ksar-Hellal (Monastir, Tunisia), in the Department of Textile Engineering. He graduated from the National Engineering School of Monastir in 2005 with a degree in textile chemistry, followed by a Master's degree from the same institution in 2007. He then completed a sandwich PhD between ENIM at the University of Monastir in Tunisia and Grenoble INP in France in 2010. He received the "Habilitation Universitaire" from the University of Monastir in 2017 and the "Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches" from Grenoble INP in 2020.Dr Khiari's research focuses on the valorization of biomass at different scales, including fibres, nanocellulose, lignin and hemicelluloses, exploring their potential use as raw materials in various industrial applications such as textiles, papermaking, polymeric materials, composites and nanocomposites. Particular attention is paid to plant biomass from annual crops, especially agricultural residues and industrial wastes. Throughout his career, he has coordinated several research projects, mainly in collaboration with industry, and has supervised numerous postgraduate students. Dr Khiari has also been a member of scientific and organizing committees and has participated in national and international evaluation panels.

Mohammad Jawaid is currently working as Distinguished Professor at Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department, United Arab Emirates University, UAE. He has more than 25 years of experience in teaching, research, and industries. His area of research interests includes hybrid composites, lignocellulosic reinforced/filled polymer composites, advance materials: graphene/nanoclay/fire retardant, modification and treatment of lignocellulosic fibers and solid wood, biopolymers and biopolymers for packaging applications, nanocomposites and nanocellulose fibers, and polymer blends. He is also Professional membership of ACS, SPE, APA, MySET, etc. He is Fellow and Chartered Scientist of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3), UK. He is also 1% Highly cited researcher Clarivate 2023.
