Critics Review
“Dr. Mautner, a celebrated expert in Italian lifestyle, culture, and heritage, offers another significant lesson from the treasured Mediterranean culture: perhaps the secrets of the Italian fountain of youth have less to do with turning back the clock and more to do with how we choose to live.
Italian women seem to understand instinctively the inherent benefits of self-care, self-awareness, connection, pleasure, and living well. Across the different stages of a woman’s life, these shared values and traditions nurture a sense of well-being, sustain a youthful spirit, and cultivate the confident self-awareness that contributes to that uniquely Italian quality of sprezzatura–the art of appearing effortlessly graceful.
In eight beautifully laid-out chapters, Dr. Mautner explores the rituals, attitudes, and cultural traditions that help women in Italy embrace aging not as something to fear, but as another stage of life to be lived fully and beautifully.
Like the paradox of Italy itself–where the splendors of ancient civilizations continually reveal themselves through the modern science of archaeology– the wisdom of the past may hold some of the most relevant lessons for how we live today.
This book invites us to discover those lessons–and perhaps to find our own version of the Italian fountain of youth: not in a number, but in a way of life.
Dr. Mautner has graciously shared her insights and research on the Italian American community and our heritage with the women of NOIAW and we are happy to share it with a larger audience.” – Pat Tinto, Chair, National Organization of Italian American Women

“Dr. Mautner’s bravura new book Italian Women Don’t Get Old is both a manifesto and love letter to the life-affirming aspects of womanhood. As much a state of mind as it is a place, Italy becomes a metaphor for the verisimilitude that beauty deepens with the passing of time. Since the age of 19, Italy has been a siren call beckoning me year after year. Decades later, and now at the age of 72, I can fully appreciate this book’s intrinsic wisdom.” – Rozanne Gold, four-time James Beard award-winning food writer, poet, Jungian psychoanalyst
