About The Author

Quentin Crisp

Quentin Crisp was born in Sutton, Surrey, England, on December 25, 1908, and died in Manchester on November 21, 1999, just weeks before his 91st birthday. He was an English writer, raconteur, and actor, known for his flamboyant style and unapologetic embrace of his homosexuality, at a time when it was still illegal in Britain. He is perhaps best known for his 1968 autobiography, The Naked Civil Servant, which chronicled his experiences of being openly gay in a largely intolerant society. Crisp moved to New York City in 1981, where he continued to write and perform, becoming a celebrated figure in the city’s artistic and literary circles. He remained a prominent cultural figure until his death, offering his unique perspective on life, style, and the pursuit of individuality.
