About The Author
Professor Stephen Tong
An Asian Australian, from a migrant family and educated in the public system, Stephen achieved Professorship by the age of 39. He now juggles two careers as a leading Professor of Obstetrics in Australia.
Specialist Obstetrician
For two decades, Stephen has provided pregnancy care, personally assisting in the birth of thousands of babies. He continues his practice at Mercy Hospital for Women, a leading academic maternity hospital, where he also trains future obstetric specialists.
He has supported countless normal vaginal births, offering encouragement during pushing. He has also performed and supervised thousands of caesarean sections and forceps-assisted births. Stephen has provided comfort to families experiencing stillbirth and offered expert care for severe pregnancy complications. He has also led clinical teams in emergency situations to save lives.
Research Academic
Stephen is recognized internationally as one of Australia’s top Professors of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He leads a large team of scientists and clinical researchers dedicated to improving pregnancy safety. His team includes Associate Professors, Senior Lecturers, a Rhodes Scholar, and numerous obstetricians and scientists.
He is a lead investigator in global clinical trials across the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. These trials are evaluating new treatments for major pregnancy complications like preeclampsia and ectopic pregnancy, aiming to save mothers and babies. Many of these treatments originated from Stephen’s laboratory research in Melbourne before advancing to international trials.
His team is also running a multi-million dollar research program to develop a blood test to help prevent stillbirth, which tragically affects three million pregnancies annually worldwide.
Stephen is also involved in research in low and middle-income countries, co-leading a research consortium conducting large population studies in Pakistan, the Solomon Islands, and South Africa. These studies aim to document the incidence of life-threatening complications in pregnant women in resource-scarce regions, seeking to uncover hidden tragedies and ultimately save lives.
He has authored over 180 scientific papers, many published in prestigious international journals. His research team has secured over ten million dollars in competitive research grants. For his research accomplishments, he has received three major national awards from the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC).
