Peter Vanezis
Peter Vanezis, OBE, M.B., Ch.B., M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.Path., F.R.C.P. (Glasg.), F.F.F.L.M., F.C.S.F.S., F.R.S.M., F.A.F.M.S. (UK), D.M.J. (Path) is Professor Emeritus of Forensic Medical Sciences at the University of London. After qualifying in Medicine at the University of Bristol Medical School in 1972, the author began his career in Forensic Medicine in 1974 at the London Hospital specialising in pathology, and then as a Regius Professor at the University of Glasgow, before returning to Queen Mary University of London. In 2010, he established the Academy of Forensic Medical Sciences and became an Emeritus Professor at the University of London in 2018. The author has been involved in many high-profile cases and participated and led teams in aircraft accidents and other mass disasters. He was made an OBE in 2001 for Forensic Pathology Services in Kosovo. Whilst in Glasgow, he established the first Human Identification Centre and the Centre for International Forensic Assistance. He was a member of the Forensic Advisory Board of the International Committee of the Red Cross for many years and had arranged numerous courses on human rights abuses locally and abroad. He has authored over 160 publications in peer-reviewed journals, authored four textbooks, and contributed numerous chapters in textbooks. He has also been a past president of the British Academy of Forensic Sciences and a past editor-in-chief of Medicine, Science and the Law (currently Emeritus EC). He is currently Vice-Chairman of Digital Autopsy UK and Honorary President of the Balkan Academy of Forensic Sciences. His research interests include various aspects of forensic pathology, identification, and developing educational needs. He has received three awards for his research from the British Medical Association (BMA) as well as a number of other substantial grants.
