About The Author

Paul Vallely

Paul Vallely first met Bob Geldof while covering the 1984–85 famine in Ethiopia for The Times. Inspired by Vallely’s reporting, Geldof invited him to travel across Africa in 1985 to determine how the £140 million raised by Live Aid would be allocated.

Vallely co-authored Bob Geldof’s bestselling autobiography, Is That It, and wrote several publications on Live Aid and Live 8 for the Band Aid Trust. In 1990, he authored Bad Samaritans: First World Ethics and Third World Debt, a seminal study that influenced Geldof and Bono’s transition from charitable aid to justice advocacy, culminating in Live 8.

He also served as Geldof’s advisor on the Commission for Africa. This commission was instrumental in advocating for increased aid to Africa and debt cancellation, leading to the Gleneagles G8 summit. Vallely contributed to the Commission for Africa report, writing the Penguin edition and co-authoring the full report, Our Common Interest.

Previously, Vallely chaired two international development agencies: Traidcraft and the Catholic Institute for International Relations. He is currently a senior research fellow at the Global Development Institute, University of Manchester.
