About The Author
Patrick Thorne
Working as “The Snow Hunter,” Patrick Thorne has spent his entire adult life making a living as a year-round ski travel writer. Along with editing ski magazines and websites, Patrick has written for hundreds of magazines and newspapers around the world, winning multiple awards for his work. He has written or contributed to a dozen ski books, from his first, The Essential Ski Holiday Guide, in 1984, which published when he was just 20 years old, to his best-selling book Powder.
In the 1990s, Patrick built the world’s first database of over 6,000 ski areas worldwide, which still sits behind many ski websites. Passionate about snow, he’s been following weather conditions closely for four decades and runs a site aimed at helping in the fight to slow climate change.
Patrick first skied aged 15 and has since visited more than 250 ski areas across the globe. He lives and works from an 8-acre croft (small farm) in the Highlands of Scotland where he can ski in his back field whenever there’s an inch of snow. He and his wife, Sally, have three sons, two daughters-in-law, and one granddaughter, all of whom they ski with whenever they can. They also have two ponies, two dogs, two cats, eight hens, and 500 Christmas trees, none of which ski.
