Critics Review
“Skillfully developed and sustained to the very end. Pinkney’s stark scratchboard illustrations evoke an eerie mood, which heightens the suspense of each tale…. A stellar collection.”–School Library Journal, starred review

Patricia C. McKissack (1944-2017)
Patricia C. McKissack was an award-winning author from a family of skilled storytellers. Her family nurtured her ability to listen and observe, fostering a lifelong passion for words.
Her book, The Dark-Thirty: Southern Tales of the Supernatural, earned her a Newbery Honor in 1993 and the Coretta Scott King Author Award. She often collaborated on books with her husband, Fredrick.
McKissack expressed a desire to have met her hero, Frederick Douglass, to discuss his journey from slavery to freedom. Had she not pursued a career in writing, she would have explored interior design or architecture, finding fulfillment in telling stories through design.
