About The Author

Neal Cook

Professor Neal Cook

Professor Neal Cook is a Professor of Nursing and the Head of School at the School of Nursing and Paramedic Science, Ulster University. He is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and leads the Athena Gold Award winning team. Professor Cook serves as President of the European Association of Neuroscience Nurses and is an Executive Board Member of the British Association of Neuroscience Nurses.

His work centrally focuses on person-centred nursing, particularly its application in both practice and education. Professor Cook’s background includes expertise in neurosciences, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. He has extensive experience in neurosciences and critical care since registering as a nurse, progressing to become a specialist practitioner before moving into education and research. He has authored numerous publications in clinical, research, and education fields related to person-centredness, education, and neurosciences and remains actively engaged in these areas. Professor Cook continues to practice clinically in neurosciences and is a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (UK) and the Nursing and Midwifery Board Ireland (NMBI).

Andrea Shepherd

Andrea Shepherd is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of School at the School of Nursing and Paramedic Science, Ulster University. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds the position of Vice President of the British Association of Neuroscience Nurses.

Andrea has a teaching background in anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology for undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students across various programs during her tenure in higher education. She is also a certified Generic Instructor and Advanced Life Support Instructor with the Resuscitation Council UK, delivering life support training within Health and Social Care Trusts and at the University. Her nursing career encompasses critical care and orthopaedics, where she became a specialist practitioner before transitioning to education. Currently, she plays a leading role in adult pre-registration nursing and curriculum development. Andrea remains clinically active in critical care and is a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (UK).
