Think of Ancient Egypt, and you'relikely to think of hieroglyphic-covered tombs being unsealed by Victorianexplorers, revealing 'wonderful things' - as Howard Carter famously remarked onseeing Tutankhamun's treasures for the first time. But how did the practiceknown as 'Egyptology' become the domain of wealthy Europeans? And what can bedone in future to give agency back to the country where it all began?
Dr Monica Hanna has spent hercareer monitoring and trying to disrupt the flow of Ancient Egyptian antiquitiesout of her home country - in the past, she has even directly confronted armedgraverobbers. In The Future of Egyptology, she presents a broad andgenerous vision of Egyptology as it could and should be: asubject not only concerned with the glitz and glamour of the Pharoahs, but withconnecting the ancient world with the Egypt of today - as well as reclaimingits treaures.
Hanna argues that only bydisentangling Egyptology from its problematic past of looting, racism andEuro-centric thinking can the subject truly find a way forward. The Futureof Egytology is a brilliantly argued, unexpected and deeply rewardingjourney into the future - via ancient history.
Dr Monica Hanna is Dean at the Arab Academy forScience, Technology & Maritime Transport in Alexandria, and aworld-renowned Egyptologist. She set up the Egypt Heritage Taskforce in thewake of the Arab Spring, and was recognised in 2014 for her work by SAFE(Saving Antiquities For Everyone). In 2020 she was part of a group opposing therelocation of sphinxes by the Egyptian authorities to Tahrir Square. Morerecently she continues to speak out against 'colonialist cosplay' in Egypt.
