Summary

The conquest of the stratosphere was one of the most dramatic and ambitious goals of early twentieth-century aviation. While Western efforts to push ever higher into the thin air above 10,000 metres are relatively well known, Soviet projects in this field have remained obscure outside Russia. This groundbreaking book reveals, for the first time in English, the full story of Soviet attempts to master high-altitude flight.

About The Author

Mikhail Maslov

Mikhail Maslov was born in 1954 in Mary (USSR, now Turkmenistan) to a family of a serviceman. He was raised in a town in the Urals.

Maslov graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute (University) in 1982 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He then worked as a structural design engineer at the Tupolev Design Bureau from 1982 to 1986. Subsequently, he transferred to the TsAGI engineering information department, where he held various positions, including deputy head of the department.

Since the late 1990s, Maslov has been actively involved in the restoration of historical aircraft, including the Po-2, I-15bis, I-153, I-16, DIT, and MiG-3 airplanes.

During his time at Tupolev, Maslov developed an interest in the history of Soviet aviation from the 1920s to the 1940s and began researching and analyzing archival materials. Over the past 30 years, he has dedicated himself to this work, authoring numerous articles and several dozen books on the history of Soviet aircraft from that period.
