About The Author

Mel Hurtig

Melvin Hurtig, OC

Melvin Hurtig was a prominent Canadian publisher, political activist, and author. He established Hurtig Books in Edmonton in 1956, which quickly evolved into a vital hub for the literary community and one of Canada’s largest retail bookselling operations. After selling his stores in 1972, Hurtig shifted his focus to publishing Canadian works under the Hurtig Publishers imprint.

His contributions to Canadian publishing were recognized when he was named Canadian Book Publisher of the Year twice, in 1975 and 1981. Hurtig’s most significant achievement was conceiving and publishing the highly acclaimed Canadian Encyclopedia in two editions (1985 and 1988), followed by the Junior Encyclopedia of Canada in 1990. He sold Hurtig Publishers to McClelland & Stewart in 1991.
