Masamune Shirow
Shirow Masamune was born in 1961 in Kobe, Japan. He attended the Osaka University of Arts, where a fellow student was Hideaki Anno, the future creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Masamune began his professional manga career in 1985 with Appleseed, which won the Seiun Award, one of Japan’s top prizes for science fiction. His work was first published in English by Dark Horse in 1992, beginning with the art book Intron Depot and the manga Orion and Dominion. In 1995, Dark Horse released the first English edition of his most famous manga series, Ghost in the Shell.
In 1996, Masamune became the first manga artist to be featured on the cover of Wizard: The Guide to Comics. Through his futuristic designs, dynamic action sequences, and visionary concepts, Masamune has become one of the most influential manga artists on international creators. Among his fans are film directors James Cameron and Neill Blomkamp.
