About The Author

Mark Gruenwald

Mark Gruenwald (1953-1996)

Mark Gruenwald was a highly influential writer and editor at Marvel Comics. He is celebrated for his pioneering work on the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and his acclaimed magnum opus, Squadron Supreme. Gruenwald also penned over a hundred issues of Captain America, crafted multiple sagas for Marvel Two-in-One, and created several miniseries, including Contest of Champions, Marvel’s first multi-hero saga. He further explored the Marvel Universe’s ancient history through a series of What If? backup stories, which he also illustrated.

Ralph Macchio

Ralph Macchio began his career as an assistant editor for Marvel’s black-and-white magazines. His writing career flourished with contributions to Avengers, Thor, and other titles. As an editor, he oversaw prominent series such as Master of Kung Fu, Moon Knight, and Daredevil. After editing numerous Spider-Man titles, he transitioned to the Ultimate line, guiding it through significant transformations.

Marv Wolfman

Marv Wolfman is an award-winning writer who succeeded Roy Thomas as Marvel’s editor-in-chief. He is widely recognized for his scripts for Tomb of Dracula and also had notable runs on Dr. Strange, Fantastic Four, and Nova, among others. His 1980s collaboration with George Perez, New Teen Titans, became a massive success for DC Comics. Wolfman and Perez redefined DC’s continuity with Crisis on Infinite Earths. Subsequently, Wolfman contributed scripts for animated television series like G.I. Joe and Transformers.

George Perez

George Perez is an artist renowned for his work on team titles. He had significant runs on Marvel’s Avengers and Fantastic Four, as well as DC’s Justice League of America and New Teen Titans, the latter co-created with Marv Wolfman. Together, Wolfman and Perez redefined the DC Universe in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Perez later returned to Avengers with writer Kurt Busiek following the “Heroes Reborn” event. Their collaboration on JLA/Avengers in 2003, a crossover featuring nearly every member of both flagship teams, exceeded all expectations.

Ron Wilson

Ron Wilson began illustrating the adventures of The Thing in Marvel Two-in-One in 1975 and continued for most of the title’s duration. He subsequently illustrated the follow-up series The Thing until its conclusion in 1986. Wilson also contributed artwork to titles such as Avengers, Captain Britain, and Power Man, as well as the entirety of Marvel’s licensed Masters of the Universe series. For DC Comics, he provided character designs for the Milestone imprint.

John Byrne

John Byrne has maintained a continuous career in the comic industry as both a writer and artist since 1975. After his initial collaboration with Chris Claremont on Iron Fist, Byrne and Claremont moved to X-Men, producing a run still considered among the title’s finest. Byrne’s subsequent tenure on Fantastic Four was equally acclaimed, with his imaginative storylines and dynamic artwork drawing comparisons to the original Stan Lee and Jack Kirby issues. He also spun Alpha Flight into its own series. In 1986, he revitalized DC’s flagship hero, Superman, with a reimagining that garnered a historic Time magazine cover. Byrne’s extensive contributions to the Marvel Universe include memorable work on virtually every major hero, with celebrated runs on Captain America, Iron Man, Sensational She-Hulk, Namor the Sub-Mariner, and The Thing. In the 21st century, Byrne’s considerable body of work includes projects for IDW such as Star Trek and Angel.
