Margaret McNamara
Kay Thompson (1909–1998)
Kay Thompson was a singer, dancer, vocal arranger, and coach for many MGM musicals in the 1940s. The character of Eloise originated from a voice Thompson used to amuse her friends, portraying a precocious six-year-old. In collaboration with Hilary Knight, Thompson achieved literary success with the publication of Eloise in 1955, which became an immediate bestseller and has since sold over two million copies. Together, Thompson and Knight created four additional Eloise books: Eloise in Paris, Eloise at Christmas, Eloise in Moscow, and Eloise Takes a Bawth.
Hilary Knight
Hilary Knight, son of artist-writers Clayton Knight and Katharine Sturges, received his education at the Art Students League, where he was a student of Reginald Marsh. Beyond the Eloise series, Knight has illustrated over fifty children’s books, and has authored six of them. He resides and works in New York City, in proximity to The Plaza Hotel.
Margaret McNamara
Margaret McNamara, a pseudonym for literary agent Brenda Bowen, is the author of the Christopher Award–winning Robin Hill School series, which marked its 20th anniversary in 2024. She also penned the Mr. Tiffin’s Classroom series, featuring titles such as How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? (recipient of the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Best Book Gold Award) and The Dinosaur Expert (which garnered three starred reviews). Among her other notable picture books is Vote for Our Future, illustrated by Micah Player, which received a starred review from Kirkus Reviews, who deemed it “essential.” Margaret McNamara lives in New York City and dedicates a portion of her summers to Maine.
