About The Author

Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius was born Marcus Annius Verus in Rome on April 26, 121. He received his education at home from distinguished tutors.

In 161, upon the death of Antoninus Pius, Marcus ascended to the throne of the Roman Empire. He appointed Lucius Verus as co-emperor, marking the first time in history that Rome was governed by two emperors simultaneously.

During his military campaigns against the Sarmatians and Germans, Marcus documented his emotions, thoughts, and reflections in a collection of twelve books known as Meditations. Originally composed in Greek, Meditations chronicles different phases of his life and offers a profound glimpse into his inner world, his Stoic principles, and his philosophy.

The first English translation of Meditations was published in 1634 by Meric Casaubon. With its enduring themes, ideas, and beliefs, Meditations continues to inspire readers across the centuries and stands as a seminal work of Greek and philosophical literature.

Marcus Aurelius died on March 17, 180, and was succeeded by his son, Commodus.
