Appliqu
Applique quilts can be stunningbut they also have a reputation for being fussy, difficult, and time consuming. Over the years, a number of machine-applique techniques have been developed with the intention of saving quilters time while providing a look similar to traditional needle-turn or prepared-edge applique. The quilts in this book employ a technique called flip and fuse, which uses single-sided fusible interfacing (commonly available at fabric stores) to affix the applique pieces to the background fabric. The flip” part of the name comes from the way the interfacing is stitched to the applique fabric, then flipped inside out to turn the edges under, mimicking the neatly turned edges of hand applique. Quilter Harmening describes the basic process, followed by a variety of patterns featuring flip and fuse applique. Each pattern includes a full cutting chart for sizes ranging from baby to queen (a few patterns also include king-size instructions), along with directions for any necessary piecing and the flip and fuse applique. Suggestions for quilting the finished pieces are provided, as are traceable templates for the appliques. VERDICT Applique is ever popular, and quilters who like the look of it without the time-consuming hand stitching may be interested in the flip and fuse approach. Library Journal, December 2015 This machine applique method uses fusible interfacing or wash away applique sheets. The applique sheets can print the templates on an inkjet printer. The fusible surface is sewn onto the right side of the fabric with a 1⁄8” seam. The interfacing is slit and the fabric is pulled through. The applique is pressed on to the background and attached with stitching. There are twelve projects, many in six sizes. They are graded in levels of difficulty from 1 to 3.
