About The Author
Mairi Hedderwick
Mairi Hedderwick, a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, was a teacher before becoming a children’s book illustrator. As an author and illustrator, she is best known for creating the character Katie Morag in 1984. Katie Morag’s fictional Hebridean island of Struay draws inspiration from the author’s lifelong connection with the Isle of Coll. In 2013, Katie Morag was adapted into a successful TV series on Cbeebies. Mairi Hedderwick has also written and illustrated numerous other books for children and adults, all set against the backdrop of the Highlands and Islands. She received an Honorary Degree from Stirling University in 2003 for her significant contribution to writing and illustration in Scotland, particularly for children. Her illustrated adult books include An Eye on the Hebrides, a record of a six-month journey through the islands west of Scotland; Highland Journey, following in the footsteps of Victorian writer and artist John T Reid; Sea Change, documenting the passage of a 26ft vintage yacht through the Caledonian canal; Shetland Rambles, her latest illustrated personal journey with John T Reid once more; and The Last Laird of Coll, a memoir of Kenneth Stewart, the last laird of Coll.
