Summary
Jolene: Unpacking Dolly Parton’s Timeless Anthem
“Jolene,” Dolly Parton’s iconic 1974 hit, transcends the typical cheating song narrative. Its ambiguity sparks endless questions: Is Jolene a villain or a victim? Is the narrator fearful or empowered?
In Dolly Parton’s Jolene, Lydia R. Hamessley delves into the song’s origins, its place within the Jolene album, and offers fresh interpretations of its lyrics through detailed musical analysis.
