About The Author
Louisa May Alcott
Louisa May Alcott (Germantown, Pennsylvania, 1832 - Boston, Massachusetts, 1888) received much of her education from her father and was in contact with notable figures such as Emerson, Thoreau, and Theodore Parker. She took on various jobs to help her family, consisting of her parents and four sisters, through financial difficulties. During the American Civil War, she volunteered as a nurse, an experience she documented in Hospital Sketches (1863). However, she had to abandon this work after contracting typhoid fever. From then on, she was able to dedicate herself entirely to writing.
Among the books she published were several stories under a pseudonym. It was the publication of Little Women (1868-1869) that made her a truly popular writer. The success was immediate and overwhelming, followed by other novels such as An Old-Fashioned Girl (1870), Little Men (1871), Work: A Story of Experience (1873), Eight Cousins (1875), and Rose in Bloom (1876).
