About The Author
Louisa May Alcott
Louisa May Alcott was an American writer and poet. She was born on November 22, 1832, to Bronson Alcott, a transcendentalist preacher and teacher, and Abby May Alcott, a social worker. Both her parents were involved in the reform movements of the 1800s.
Despite her father’s idealism, the family faced poverty for extended periods. At the age of 15, Louisa resolved to contribute financially to her family by any means necessary, including sewing, writing, and teaching. She was homeschooled, developing a passion for reading and using writing as a powerful form of expression.
Alcott’s intellectual development was influenced by family friends who were prominent writers and intellectuals of the era, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
In 1868, Alcott published Little Women, an autobiographical novel that achieved immense success, bringing her the fame and financial security she desired for her family. The novel’s depiction of the March sisters’ vibrant personalities and their close family relationships offered a glimpse into Alcott’s own life. Little Women remains her most beloved and recognized work.
The success of Little Women led to further narratives drawing from her life, including Little Men, Eight Cousins, and Jo’s Boys.
A strong advocate for women’s rights, Louisa May Alcott passed away in Boston on March 6, 1888, just two days after her father’s death.
