What They're Saying

Critics Review

‘A whirling counter-history that spins the known facts of the relationship between Shakespeare and Marlowe into a fantasy of flirtation, spying, love and suspicion’

* WhatsOnStage *

‘Hot and horny… studded with insider references’

* The Times *

‘Adams writes not with a pen so much as a razor blade, and the play cuts to the bone as Kit and Will trade barbs, ambitions and, ultimately, places in a history play that rewrites our understanding of these two figures’

* Star Tribune *

‘Sizzling… energetic and erotic… an intelligent slice of historical fiction’

* Guardian *

‘Riveting… the ultimate double act’

* Observer *

‘A seductively clever examination of Kit Marlowe and Shakespeare’s relationship that blends intrigue and shifty eroticism with in-jokes and a discourse on creativity… Liz Duffy Adams blends period and modern idioms with aplomb… the way her script entwines the vicissitudes of sex, celebrity and Elizabethan politics is enormous fun’

* Evening Standard *

‘A stylish two-hander laced with sex and treachery’

* The Stage *

‘Thrilling entertainment’

* Broadway World *

‘Electric… an up-to-the-minute encounter between rival Elizabethan playwrights that explores the cause of – and often barriers to – artistic freedom now as well as in Elizabethan England’

* The Arts Desk *

‘Fascinating and mischievous’

* Financial Times *

‘A bold and cerebral imagining of a clandestine creative collision… Adams’ writing is dense and richly layered, peppered with references and easter eggs that will delight aficionados of both playwrights… a thrilling and thought-provoking piece of theatre that reimagines history with wit and urgency. It’s a must-see for fans of Shakespeare, Marlowe and anyone who enjoys their drama served with a bite’

* Theatre Weekly *

‘A seriously steamy cat-and-mouse game… a thoroughly entertaining sparring match… an accessible romp that honours Shakespeare’s populist spirit, jubilantly reclaims queer history, and explores a literary mystery that continues to fascinate’

* London Theatre *

‘Seductive, clever and blinding… a show for Shakespeare lovers and those indifferent to the bard’

* A Youngish Perspective *

‘Ferociously funny – and flirty’

* Liam O’Dell *
