Her book Dressed in Black: The Shangri-Las and Their Recorded Legacy is based on her PhD thesis (University of Western Australia), and she has contributed numerous articles to academic journals, books, and music magazines, including Uncut and Limelight. MacKinney plays guitar and organ, and has performed extensively in Australia and internationally, both solo as Mystic Eyes and with bands, including Super Luminum, Taipan Tiger Girls, and Hospital Pass.
