Summary
The Hunting of the Snark (1876) is a poem by Lewis Carroll. Filled with many of the portmanteau words developed for his poem “Jabberwocky,” The Hunting of the Snark is a delightfully strange tale of mystery and adventure. Often read as an allegory for everything from tuberculosis to the endless quest for happiness itself, The Hunting of the Snark, much like the Snark itself, refuses all description.

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898)
Lewis Carroll, born Charles Dodgson, was an English children’s writer born in Cheshire. He was the son of prominent Anglican clergymen and, from a young age, suffered from a stammer and pulmonary issues. This often confined him to his home, where he developed a passion for writing poems and stories, which began appearing in magazines during his early twenties.
After graduating from the University of Oxford in 1854, Carroll took up a position as a mathematics lecturer at Christ Church, a role he maintained for thirty years. His literary career took off in 1865 with the publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a seminal work of children’s literature that cemented his reputation as a master fantasist of the Victorian era.
He followed this success with Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There in 1871. Carroll’s creations have profoundly influenced readers of all ages across generations and have been widely adapted for various media, including theater, film, and television. Beyond his prose, Carroll is also celebrated for his nonsense poetry, notably The Hunting of the Snark (1876) and the poem “Jabberwocky.”
