Len Wein

Co-creator of DC’s Swamp Thing (1972), Len Wein later moved to Marvel for extended runs on Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, and Thor. He was instrumental in the creation of Giant-Size X-Men #1, which significantly impacted Marvel’s future. Wein returned to DC as an editor, overseeing the introduction of British talent, most notably Alan Moore’s Watchmen. His work also extends to television and animation, including developing a Swamp Thing screenplay and writing comic adaptations of The Simpsons and Futurama.

Marv Wolfman

An award-winning writer since 1973, Marv Wolfman succeeded Roy Thomas as Marvel’s editor-in-chief. Known for his work on Tomb of Dracula, he also contributed to Dr. Strange, Fantastic Four, and Nova. His 1980s collaboration with George Perez, New Teen Titans, became a major success for DC Comics. Wolfman and Perez collaborated again on Crisis on Infinite Earths, a landmark event for DC. He has also written for animated series such as G.I. Joe and Transformers.

Bill Mantlo

Bill Mantlo began his Marvel career on Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, introducing White Tiger, an early Hispanic superhero. He wrote for nearly every Marvel title, with memorable runs on Incredible Hulk and Spectacular Spider-Man. Mantlo launched Cloak and Dagger in a miniseries and guided Alpha Flight. He excelled at integrating licensed properties, writing Micronauts and Rom: Spaceknight from beginning to end. At DC, he wrote the Invasion miniseries, a major crossover event.

Ross Andru (1927-1993)

In 1976, Ross Andru made comic history by penciling Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man, the first large-scale intercompany crossover. He had previously illustrated both characters extensively. Andru also drew the first appearance of the Defenders in Marvel Feature. At DC, he spent nine years collaborating with Bob Kanigher on Wonder Woman. With Marv Wolfman and Mike Esposito, he co-created Vigilante (Adrian Chase).

Sal Buscema

After starting as an inker for his brother John, Sal Buscema went on to pencil Captain America, Defenders, Incredible Hulk, and more. Known for his punctuality, he worked across various genres. His 1970s work included Ms. Marvel, Nova, Sub-Mariner, and the first appearance of Spider-Woman. Buscema was the sole artist on Spectacular Spider-Man for over one hundred issues and penciled Spider-Man adventures in Marvel Team-Up, where he and writer Bill Mantlo introduced Captain Jean DeWolff. He also worked on The Thing’s Marvel Two-in-One and reunited with his brother John on Steve Englehart’s Fantastic Four. Later, he inked Tom DeFalco’s Spider-Girl titles and Thunderstrike miniseries.

Don Perlin

A dedicated creator known for his work on long-running series like Ghost Rider and Defenders, Don Perlin contributed to nearly every aspect of comic books, including penciling, inking, character creation, editing, and writing. A student of Burne Hogarth, Perlin began his career in 1951, drawing horror comics and penciling Will Eisner’s The Spirit. After military service, he returned to comics with Harvey and Charlton. In 1973, he began a long association with Marvel, finishing John Buscema’s art on Thor and inking various titles. He took over Werewolf by Night from Mike Ploog, penciling and inking it for two years. Perlin also penciled and inked the supernatural adventures of Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider, becoming strongly associated with the character. In the 1980s, he had a long run on Defenders before drawing Marvel’s adaptation of Transformers. His popular work in the early 1990s on Valiant’s Solar, Man of the Atom and Bloodshot preceded his semi-retirement.
