About The Author

Laura Mitchell

Dr Mitchell completed her specialty training in GUM/HIV in the North of England in 2013 and currently works as a Consultant in Sexual Health in Plymouth. She has an MSc in Medical Anthropology and has recently spent some time working as a Consultant in the West of England Specialist Gender Identity Clinic. She is an active member of the BASHH Gender and Sexual Minorities Special Interest Group.

Dr Sankar qualified in 1977 from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. After obtaining the MRCP he completed higher specialist training in Genitourinary medicine in Newcastle upon Tyne and was appointed as consultant GUM physician in Cumbria in 1988, and in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1989. He retired in November 2017. He was also an honorary lecturer at the University of Newcastle between 1990 and 2013. Dr Sankar has served as Northern deanery’s training programme director for genitourinary medicine and organised undergraduate teaching in genitourinary medicine. His special interests include HIV, complex GUM and genital dermatology.

Dr Elawad received his primary medical qualification from the University of Khartoum (Sudan) and obtained the MRCPI (Ireland) and the MRCP (UK) after taking various training posts in general internal medicine in the UK. In the North East of England Dr Elawad gained training in general internal medicine and infectious diseases and then specialist training in GUM and HIV medicine. Dr Elawad is currently working as a Consultant in Sexual Health with Northumbria Healthcare Trust and an honorary consultant in infectious diseases with the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne. Dr Elawad has regular clinics with the infectious diseases unit of the RVI which has a cohort of over 1000 people living with HIV. Dr Elawad trains and supervises a number of doctors, nurses and other health care professionals. Dr Elawad has special interest in drug treatment of HIV, sexual health needs of people living with HIV and complex GUM.

Dr Howe studied medicine and obtained an intercalated honours degree in developmental biology at the University of Edinburgh, then moved to the North East of England for speciality training in genitourinary medicine and HIV. She has contributed to national guideline writing for the British HIV Association and started her first consultant post with NHS Highlands, based in Inverness, in Autumn 2018.

Dr Price is a consultant working at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne. He works in Infectious Diseases and Acute Medicine and in this time has led the acute admissions unit in Newcastle. He was Director of Infection Prevention and Control in the trust for 6 years. He helps to look after a cohort of over 1000 patients living with HIV and is part of the ID on call team providing a regional service and advice regarding infectious diseases and HIV. He has a regular hepatitis clinic and set up the first hepatitis outreach clinic to a drug rehabilitation centre in the North East. He has a wide research interest and has published/presented on the basic science of hepatitis, various clinical aspects of blood borne viruses and the complications of HIV medication. More recently he has become lead in infection in the Newcastle’s NIHR Medtech and In vitro diagnostics Co-operative and has been involved in the clinical development of in-vitro diagnostics including point of care tests.
